How can we help?

Ask a question, or browse by topic.

1Getting started

What is Voilà, and what is it not?

Voilà builds and hosts a professional website for your small business — you don't design or code anything. You pick a style, we tailor it, and it's live. It's not a drag-and-drop builder and not for complex web apps or big online stores. If your Saturday idea of fun is dragging boxes around a page, we're not your tool — and we'll say so honestly.

How does my site actually get made?
  1. Choose a design built for your industry (café, plumber, salon, etc.).
  2. Add your business name and details — or let our AI draft the words for you.
  3. Tweak anything by clicking it.
  4. Publish. It's live on a real web address with https, on phones and computers.

Most owners are live in well under an hour.

What's included, and what does free vs paid mean?
  • Free: a complete site on a yourbusiness.voila.today address, the editor, hosting and https — enough to be genuinely live.
  • Paid, per year (not per month): Starter $79 — a complete one-page site on your own domain. Business $149 — a multi-page site plus done-for-you content updates. Premium $249 — everything in Business plus priority help and a seasonal refresh.
How do I get back to edit my site later? (your edit link)

Your site has a private edit link (like yourbusiness.voila.today/edit-xxxxxxxx/) — that link is your key to editing. Bookmark it. Anyone with it can edit, so keep it to yourself. Lost it? See 10.1.

---

2Editing your site

How do I turn editing on or off?

Open your edit link. The Editing on switch (bottom of the editor panel) is on by default — click any text or photo to change it. Turn it off to preview exactly what visitors see, animations and all. Editing off changes nothing about your live site; it's just a preview.

How do I change text?

With editing on, click the words and type. No separate fields. Changes are saved on your device as a draft as you go; they go public only when you Publish (see 8.1).

How do I add or remove items (menu rows, FAQs, services)?

Lists like menu items, FAQs and services have a + Add button under them, and each row has a small × to remove it. Some sections keep a minimum (e.g. a menu needs at least one item) and we'll tell you if you hit it. Removing a row shows an "Undo" link straight away, in case of a mis-click.

Did my change save? Can I undo?

Edits save to your device automatically as a draft — close the tab and come back, they're still there. There isn't a general undo button, but you have two safety nets: removing a list item shows an "Undo" link, and nothing you do touches your live site until you press Publish — so an unpublished change is never public. To reverse a text edit, just retype it.

Why can't I edit this part?

You can edit your words, photos, colours, typeface, and contact/social buttons. Structure (layout, section order, the design) is fixed on purpose — it's what keeps your site looking professionally designed no matter what you type. If something won't click, it's structural.

The editor looks "frozen" / animations stopped while editing

Deliberate. While editing, moving things (tickers, fades, floating badges) are held still so you can click and edit them. Turn Editing off (or view your published site) to see the motion as visitors will.

3Photos & images

How do I change a photo?

With editing on, click the photo — a file picker opens, choose an image from your device, and it drops in, already sized to fit.

What size and format should my photos be?
  • Format: JPG, PNG or WebP all work. (SVG/GIF are left untouched.)
  • Size: don't worry about it — we automatically shrink big phone photos and re-save them efficiently, so your site stays fast. Just pick the best-looking one.
  • Tip: for wide hero areas choose a landscape photo; for a portrait slot, a portrait one — so the crop looks right.
My new photo is blurry or badly cropped
  • Blurry: the source was small — use a larger original (straight from a phone camera is ideal).
  • Cropped oddly: the slot has a fixed shape and centres the image. Pick a photo with the important part roughly centred, or a different orientation (3.2).
I picked a photo and nothing changed

A photo occasionally needed a second try on older sites — that's fixed. If you ever see it, pick the photo once more and it'll take.

How do I remove a photo?

Photos are swap-only — there's no blank/delete. To change one, click it and pick a different image. If you want no image in a spot, that's part of the design rather than something you remove; tell us if a particular photo slot is a problem for your business and we'll help.

Where do the photos on my new site come from?

Your site arrives with the photographs from the design you chose, so it looks finished on day one. They're AI-generated images we licensed for this use — not photographs of your business, your staff or your customers, and any resemblance to a real person, place or product is coincidental. Two things worth knowing:

  • They aren't exclusive to you. Anyone who picks the same design starts with the same images. Swapping in your own photos (3.1) is what makes the site unmistakably yours — and real photos of your own place almost always sell better.
  • A few designs show a plain placeholder instead. Those demos use stock photography licensed for our own demo pages only, so it never travels to a customer site. Put your own photo in and the placeholder disappears.

Full wording is on the legal page.

4Colours & fonts

How do I change my site's colours?

Open Colour palette in the editor panel and pick a ready-made palette. Every palette is pre-checked so your text stays readable — you can't accidentally make an unreadable combination.

How do I change the typeface (fonts)?

Open Typeface and choose a font pairing. Each pairing is curated (a heading font + a body font that go together), so it always looks intentional.

My text is hard to read on my colour

It shouldn't be — palettes auto-correct text contrast for legibility. If a spot still looks low-contrast, tell us the page; it may be a photo behind the text rather than the palette.

5AI "Write my content"

What does "Write my content" do?

Tell it your business in a line and it drafts the words for your whole site — headlines, descriptions, the lot — so you're not staring at a blank page. Then you tweak anything by clicking it. Your contact details stay yours (it won't invent a phone number or address).

How do I use it?

In the editor open Write my content, describe your business (e.g. "family Italian restaurant in Leeds, wood-fired pizza, open evenings"), and generate. Review, then edit any line by clicking it.

Is there a limit?

Yes — up to 10 generations per site, plenty to get a draft you like and regenerate a few sections. It's included (no extra charge). After that you keep editing by hand.

The AI wrote something wrong

Click it and fix it — the draft is a starting point. It only writes prose; it never sets your prices, hours or contact details, so those are always exactly what you entered.

---

6Google import

What can I import from Google?

If your business is on Google Maps, paste its link and we pull your name, opening hours, rating, reviews and photos onto your site in one go — so you don't retype what Google already has.

How do I do it?

In the editor open the Magic import panel, paste your Google Maps link, and import. (On a phone: open the Google Maps app, find your business, Share → copy link.) ``

Something came in wrong from Google

Anything imported is still editable — click it and fix it. Bad hours or an old photo on Google will come in as-is, so correct it here (and ideally on Google too).

How do I remove the Google import?

Use Remove imported details in the same panel — it takes back out the address, hours, rating, reviews and photos it added, and leaves everything you wrote untouched.

7Your domain

The three ways to have a web address (start here)
You...ChooseWhat you doCost
Just want to be live todayFree voila.today addressNothing — it's already yoursIncluded
Want your own domain, don't own one yetRegister through VoilàType the name, we buy + set it up.com included; some endings a small add-on
Already bought a domain elsewhereConnect your ownAdd two DNS records at your registrarIncluded (you keep paying your registrar)

All three get automatic https and work on phones. Start free and add a domain later — nothing's locked in.

Your free voila.today address

When your site goes live it gets a free address like yourbusiness.voila.today — secure (https), works everywhere, yours for as long as your site is active. Put it on cards, WhatsApp, Google. Most owners start here and add a custom domain when ready.

Register a new domain through Voilà (the easy path)

We handle all the technical setup.

  1. In signup (or your editor) choose Register a new domain.
  2. Type the name you want, e.g. joesplumbing.
  3. We check it's available and show the endings you can have (.com, .co, etc.).
  4. Pick one and finish checkout. A .com is included in your price; a fancier ending (like .studio) adds a small yearly amount, shown as its own line on your receipt — no surprises.
  5. Done. We register it in your name, point it at your site, and switch on https. You don't touch any DNS — it just works, usually within an hour.
Connect a domain you already own

Keep it where you bought it and point it at your Voilà site. Add two records in your registrar's DNS settings:

  • A record → Host @ (or blank/"root") → 75.2.60.5
  • CNAME record → Host www → yoursite.netlify.app (we show your exact value in the editor)

Step-by-step for the common registrars:

  • GoDaddy: My Products → your domain → DNS → Manage Zones. Delete any "Parked" A record. Add → A → Name @ → 75.2.60.5. Add → CNAME → Name www → your yoursite.netlify.app. Save.
  • Namecheap: Domain List → Manage → Advanced DNS. Remove the default "CNAME/URL Redirect" parking records. Add New Record → A → Host @ → 75.2.60.5. Add New Record → CNAME → Host www → yoursite.netlify.app. Save.
  • Cloudflare: your domain → DNS → Add record. A → @ → 75.2.60.5 → Proxy "DNS only" (grey cloud). CNAME → www → yoursite.netlify.app → grey cloud too. (Orange cloud breaks https — grey is important.)
  • Google Domains / Squarespace Domains: DNS → Custom records → add the A and CNAME exactly as above.

Save, then give it time (7.5). Not sure where you bought it? It's in the confirmation email from whoever charged you for the domain.

How long until my domain works, and the padlock?
  • Connected domains: DNS spreads on its own — usually 15 min to a couple of hours, occasionally up to a day. Nothing to press.
  • Registered-through-Voilà domains: usually live within the hour.
  • The https padlock turns on automatically once the domain resolves — it can lag a little. A "Not secure" warning in the first hour is normal and clears itself. You never buy or install a certificate.
My domain isn't working — troubleshooting

Top to bottom:

  1. Under ~2 hours? Wait — DNS is slow to spread (the #1 "fix").
  2. Records match exactly? A @ = 75.2.60.5; CNAME www = your yoursite.netlify.app. One wrong character breaks it.
  3. Old records fighting yours? A leftover A record, URL-forward or second CNAME wins over yours — delete anything on @/www that isn't the two above.
  4. Cloudflare: both records must be grey cloud ("DNS only").
  5. www works but bare domain doesn't (or vice-versa)? You're missing one of the two records.
  6. Still "Not secure" after hours? https catching up; if it's been a day, tell us — we'll re-issue.
  7. Registered through us and not live after a few hours? That's ours to check — contact us with the domain.

Still stuck after half a day? Send us the domain and where you bought it; we'll read the live records and tell you exactly what to change.

Renewing your domain
  • A domain is a yearly registration (separate from your Voilà plan clock).
  • Registered through Voilà: we remind you before it lapses and you renew in a click — nothing charges silently.
  • Connected (you own it elsewhere): you renew with the registrar you bought it from. Keep that login handy.
  • If a domain ever lapses, your site stays live on its free voila.today address — you never lose the site.
Leaving with your domain (never-hostage)

Your domain is always yours.

  • You connected your own: it's already at your registrar in your name — just point the DNS elsewhere. Voilà never held it.
  • You registered through Voilà: it's registered in your name the whole time. To move it, ask us for the transfer authorisation code — for your security the registrar sends that code to you (the owner), not us, and you hand it to your new provider. We don't gatekeep it or run an exit maze.

Content, domain, dignity — all yours to walk away with.

Who can see my personal details (WHOIS privacy)?

Basic contact details are part of how domains work, but modern registrars mask them by default, so your home address and phone aren't publicly exposed. Nothing extra to buy or switch on.

8Publishing

How do I publish?

Click Publish in the editor. Your draft becomes your live site within moments. Until you publish, your edits live only on your device — the public site doesn't change.

I published but I don't see my change

Almost always your browser showing a cached copy. Hard-refresh: Ctrl+F5 (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac), or open the site in a private window. Still missing after that? Tell us the page.

Preview vs published — what's the difference?
  • Preview / draft: what you see in the editor — saved on your device, private.
  • Published: the live site your customers see. Publishing copies your draft to the live site. They can differ until you press Publish.
Can I take my site down?

Yes — you can close your site yourself, and it's safe and reversible. It's a two-step, email-confirmed action (so no one can take your site down but you): we email you a confirmation link, and on confirming, your address shows a simple "closed" notice. Your content, editor and settings are all kept, and you can reopen with one click. A closed site is only permanently removed after a grace period — until then it's always one click from back. See 11.4.

---

9Billing, renewal & refunds

What do I pay, and when?

A single yearly price — Starter $79, Business $149, Premium $249 — per year, not per month. No hidden monthly drip.

How does renewal work — will I be auto-charged?

Nothing auto-charges without you. Renewal is manual: we remind you before your year is up and you renew in a click (which extends your term by a year). If you don't renew, there's a short grace period before your site goes dormant — and you never lose your content.

Can I get a refund?

Yes — a 14-day money-back guarantee on your plan. If Voilà isn't right for you, email us within 14 days of your purchase and we'll refund it — no interrogation. Two honest deductions:

  • A domain we registered for you is already bought in your name, so its cost isn't refundable — but the domain is yours to keep and take anywhere.
  • Payment-processing fees (what the card network charges) are kept, because the processor doesn't return those to us even when we refund.

Everything else comes back. Renewals aren't refundable, but you can simply choose not to renew.

How do I update my card / payment details?

There's nothing to update — Voilà doesn't keep a card on file or run a subscription. You enter payment securely (through Stripe) only when you buy or renew, and we never see your card number.

---

10Account & recovery

I lost my edit link — how do I get back in?

You can recover it. On the recovery page, enter your site address and the email you signed up with. We check that against the private owner record kept with your site, and when it matches we email your edit link to that address. Because it only ever goes to the verified owner's inbox, a stranger can't pull it.

How do I prove a site is mine?

Ownership is tied to a private, one-way owner record stored with your site (and the email you used) — it can't be reverse-engineered. Recovery (10.1) checks it, so only you can get your edit link back.

How do I change the email on my account?

Email us to change it — it's not self-serve, because your email is part of how we verify you own the site.

---

11Leaving & exporting

Can I leave Voilà and keep everything?

Yes — content, domain, dignity, all yours. No exit maze, no holding your site hostage. If you can't leave, it isn't loyalty.

How do I take my content?

Your words and images are yours to reuse anywhere — nothing about them is locked to us. There isn't a one-click "download my site" button today, so email us and we'll send you your content (and your site's files if you want them). We'd rather hand it over than pretend a button exists that doesn't.

How do I take my domain?

See 7.8 — connected domains are already yours at your registrar; domains you registered through us move out via a transfer authorisation code the registrar sends you directly.

How do I close my site?

Close it yourself from the takedown flow — it's email-confirmed and fully reversible (your content is preserved and you can reopen in one click). It's only permanently removed after a grace period. See 8.4.

---

12Troubleshooting

My site won't load at all
  1. Try it in a private/incognito window (rules out browser cache/extensions).
  2. Check the address is exactly right (typos, missing www).
  3. Custom domain? It may still be connecting — see 7.5 / 7.6.
  4. Free voila.today address not loading? That's on us — contact us with the address.
My changes aren't showing

You're seeing a cached page, or you edited but didn't Publish. Publish, then hard-refresh (8.2).

It looks wrong on my phone

Your site adapts to phones automatically. If something looks off, tell us the page and your phone/browser — a screenshot helps. (One common cause: a very large image mid-upload — give it a moment and refresh.)

My buttons or contact form aren't working
  • Call / WhatsApp / email buttons: check the number/handle you entered — a typo breaks the link.
  • Contact form: when a visitor submits it, it emails you (the business owner) — it's built so customers don't need to open their own mail app. If you're not receiving them, check the email address on your site is right and look in spam; still nothing, contact us.
My site feels slow

Voilà sites are built to be fast — lightweight pages on fast global hosting, with your photos shrunk automatically so they don't bog the page down. If yours feels slow:

  1. Just uploaded a big photo? Give it a moment and refresh — a large image is optimised on the way in, and the very first load can lag.
  2. Test on another network (mobile data vs wifi). Slow on one but not the other is the connection, not the site.
  3. Hard-refresh (Ctrl+F5 / Cmd+Shift+R) to rule out a half-loaded cached copy.

If it's consistently slow for everyone, tell us the page and we'll look.

General "something's odd" checklist

Hard-refresh (Ctrl+F5 / Cmd+Shift+R) · try a private window · try another browser or your phone · give a new photo or domain a few minutes. Still odd? Contact us — say what you did, what you expected, and what happened.
